Des Moines authorities have disclosed the identity of the motorcyclist tragically killed in a collision on Sunday as Mitchell Ohland, a 41-year-old resident of Des Moines.

According to police reports, Ohland was traveling eastward around 2:07 p.m. when his motorcycle collided with the passenger side of a Jeep. The Jeep, operated by a 61-year-old woman, was making a left turn from westbound University onto southbound East 16th Street.

Despite wearing protective headgear, Ohland sustained critical injuries in the accident. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries while Des Moines Fire Department medics were en route to the hospital with him, as detailed in a press release. The release also mentioned potential factors contributing to the crash, including failure to yield and excessive speed.

As of Tuesday, authorities had not disclosed further details regarding the incident.

This incident marks the fourth traffic-related fatality of 2024 and the third involving a motorcycle.
