The Tioga County Sheriff’s Office has shared more details about the tragic accident, including the name of the teenager who lost his life.

In the early hours of Sunday, June 23, around 12:55 a.m., officers responded to a severe vehicle accident on Bailey Hollow Road in Newark Valley. The car was traveling east when it veered off the road and collided with a tree. The driver, a 17-year-old, and three passengers were rushed to Wilson Hospital.

The Tioga County Sheriff’s Office received assistance at the scene from the Crash Investigation and Drone Units, Newark Valley Fire Department, Campville Fire Department, Owego EMS, Maine EMS, and the New York State Police. The crash investigation remains ongoing.

Four students from Newark Valley High School were involved in the crash, which resulted in varied injuries for three of them. This information was relayed by Newark Valley Central School District Superintendent Tim Calice in a district-wide phone call.

The high school’s graduation ceremony is set for Friday, June 28.

The profound impact of this news has left our close-knit community in shock and grief-stricken. Our thoughts and condolences are with the families as they navigate through this unimaginable tragedy. During these challenging times, it is vital that we come together to support and comfort one another.

We will be offering counseling services this week to any student in need. We will have our crisis team available along with additional counselors available in the school to assist students as they express their feelings related to the loss of a classmate and friend. The most important thing we can do is to be supportive and encourage an open expression of feelings. If you feel your child needs special assistance or is having a great deal of difficulty coping, please do not hesitate to call.
