Fatal east Ottawa shooting death of Yousef Salaman – Obituary

A young man, aged 19, succumbed following a shooting incident late Friday evening in eastern Ottawa.

Law enforcement officials disclosed that the shooting took place at approximately 10 p.m. on Russell Road’s 1800 block, situated behind the Dempsey Community Centre.

On Saturday, authorities publicly identified the deceased victim as Yousef Salaman, a resident of Ottawa.

According to reports, the assailant swiftly departed the scene, evading immediate apprehension by police.

As of late Saturday afternoon, Ottawa law enforcement had not made any arrests connected to the incident.

Eyewitnesses residing in the vicinity recounted hearing multiple gunshots late into the night on Friday.

Claude St-Germain recounted his experience to CBC News, stating he heard gunfire and soon realized someone had been struck.

“Shortly after, we could hear somebody complaining of his pain from being shot,” said St-Germain, who observed the police response from his residence a few doors away from the community centre.

“It’s a tragedy for the community,” he added. “Unfortunately, it appears to be occurring more frequently.”

Another local resident, Dorine Laprade, initially mistook the gunfire for early Canada Day fireworks.

Laprade shared that she had known Salaman since moving into the neighborhood five years ago. She mentioned that he was friends with her children and had often joined them for meals at her home.

“He was the kindest boy. He always showed great respect to my children and to me,” she said tearfully. “This young man should not have lost his life today.”
