New details have emerged about the tragic death of 17-year-old Maisie Bitler, who perished in a plane crash near Lock Haven on the 4th of July.
The Clinton County Coroner confirmed Thursday morning that the crash claimed the life of Maisie Bitler, a resident of Williamsport.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the Cessna 172 aircraft crashed into a wooded area near South Allegheny Street in Woodward Township.
Bitler, the sole occupant of the plane, was pronounced dead at the scene due to her injuries.
Friends and family are grieving the loss of Maisie Bitler, whom they remembered as an extraordinary individual.
Piper Composite Squadron Wing, where Bitler was an active member, posted on Facebook: “She had the remarkable ability to uplift others, welcome newcomers, and was a natural leader to both cadets and senior members.”
Sierra Zaborowski, a friend who knew Bitler through the Civil Air Patrol and considered herself one of Bitler’s mentors, shared her sorrow.
“The last few days have been a shock. I keep expecting a text or a Snapchat from her, our usual back-and-forth,” Zaborowski said.
“We lost someone who was a light, full of joy and happiness. I hope people remember Maisie for who she was and try to embody that spirit.”
As a fellow pilot, Zaborowski expressed how flying has now become a more emotional experience for her.
“Every time I go up, I think of Maisie. I want to be a better pilot not just for her, but for my future students. I aim to honor her memory by striving to be better,” Zaborowski added.
Bitler was affectionately nicknamed “Toast” by her Civil Air Patrol peers because she often brought a loaf of bread, butter, and a toaster as a snack.
“People are focusing on how she died, but it’s crucial to remember how she lived and how we can carry that forward,” Zaborowski said.
In honor of Bitler, Zaborowski plans to create stickers as a daily reminder to live life to the fullest.
