Two British travel agents, believed to be the victims found shot dead in a burned-out rental car in Sweden over the weekend, have been revealed in photographs for the first time.
Farooq Abdulrazaq, 37, and Juan Cifuentes, 33, business partners and close friends, had traveled to Denmark on July 14 for a brief business trip aimed at promoting their agency, Empire Holidays.
Concern arose when they failed to board their return flight to London, prompting family members to report them missing. On Sunday afternoon, two bodies were discovered in a rented Toyota RAV4 in Malmo’s Fosie industrial area. However, authorities have not yet confirmed their identities.
A friend of the duo expressed fears that the incident may have been targeted, but asserted that Abdulrazaq and Cifuentes were unlikely to have encountered trouble in Sweden.
“They crossed the border and were shot at in the forest, either due to carrying money or driving a nice car,” the friend told The Independent. “They were shot first, suggesting there was an altercation beforehand.”
“Farooq was deeply involved in charitable work and had no ties to drugs or gangs,” he added.
The bodies were found badly burned, necessitating dental records for identification, according to Swedish outlet TV4.
The two men ran Empire Holidays together and had been actively promoting their business through travel posts on social media, including images from Mexico and Colombia.
Juan Cifuentes, formerly a footballer for Welwyn Garden City in the lower leagues, was also remembered fondly.
The circumstances surrounding their deaths are under investigation by Swedish authorities, who have urged anyone with relevant information to come forward.
