Kamari Lawson, age 10, and Logan Lawson, age 7 die in fatal crash
Two young boys from Cleveland, North Dakota, have lost their lives, and six others are hospitalized following an SUV accident on Interstate 94, about ten miles west of Jamestown.
The tragic incident occurred on Monday, July 15, shortly before 5 p.m., when an SUV carrying one adult and seven children veered off the interstate and rolled into a slough near Exit 248. According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, the 30-year-old driver lost control after being passed by a semi-truck. The 1997 Chevrolet Suburban ultimately ended up on its side in the water.
Family members have identified the deceased boys as brothers Kamari Lawson, age 10, and Logan Lawson, age 7. Their bodies were discovered submerged approximately 25 feet from where the vehicle landed in a slough that Stutsman County Sheriff Chad Kaiser indicated was nine feet deep due to recent rainfall.
The driver, Stachia Lawson, a church member of the Cleveland Seventh-day Adventist Church, sustained serious injuries but is expected to recover. Kamari and Logan were her nephews. Additionally, her 9-year-old daughter is in critical condition with life-threatening injuries at a Fargo hospital.
“There will be many aspects to investigate, but our main focus is determining what caused the crash and what factors contributed to it,” stated Sgt. Jon Skalicky of the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
In total, seven children were in the SUV, ranging from ages 5 to 11. Four of the children—ages 11, 9, 6, and 5—were transported to the hospital with minor injuries. First responders reported that Stachia Lawson and five of the children were either out of the water or emerging when help arrived.
“A bystander assisted in getting one of them out of the vehicle,” Sheriff Kaiser noted.
