Fatal Marshall shooting death of Markel May – Obituary

In Marshall, a tragic incident unfolded on Tuesday morning when gunfire erupted near the intersection of East Grand Avenue and Bolivar Street. The police responded to a call around 11:50 a.m., reporting the shooting. Curtis White, Jr., 18, from Marshall, has been apprehended in connection with this incident.

According to reports, White confessed during questioning at the Marshall Police Department. Allegedly, he approached a Nissan at a red light on East Grand Avenue and fired shots from a rifle into the vehicle.

Prior to White’s arrest, responding officers discovered a man behind a nearby establishment with gunshot wounds to his back. The man informed the police that another individual had been shot in the head while they were inside a white Nissan.

Marshall law enforcement detailed that White pulled alongside the Nissan at a stoplight, firing at both the driver and a passenger before fleeing. The driver sustained injuries, while the passenger, identified as Markel May, 20, tragically succumbed to the gunfire.

Investigators located a matching Nissan Versa in a nearby parking lot, where they found May deceased. Additionally, they found a black Chevrolet Tahoe parked on Bolivar Street, struck by gunfire, but fortunately, no occupants were injured.

According to the affidavit, officers recovered two spent bullet casings near the intersection, consistent with rounds typically fired from an AK-style rifle.

Eyewitnesses at the scene reported seeing the shooter in an older maroon Honda, later identified as belonging to White. Law enforcement noted that White had allegedly posted several photos on social media posing with an AK-style rifle in the days leading up to the shooting.

A sergeant from the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office located the Honda on Victory Drive, near Jasper Drive, where authorities observed an AK-style rifle on the passenger seat. Two spent casings similar to those found at the crime scene were reportedly on the dashboard.

Authorities have determined that the shooter and the victim, Markel May, were acquainted.

Curtis White, Jr. has since been arrested and is currently held in custody, facing charges including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, deadly conduct by discharging a firearm, and murder. His bail has been set at $1.2 million.

The injured man was initially treated at a Marshall hospital and later transferred to Longview. He is expected to recover from his injuries.
