Early Wednesday morning, tragedy struck when Maurice Arrinjuando Turner, aged 52, was discovered shot to death inside his apartment in Birmingham.
Responding to a Shot Spotter alert in the 800 block of Jasper Road around 1:30 a.m., officers from the North Precinct were initially unable to discern any immediate signs of trouble upon arrival.
However, just over twenty minutes later, at 1:51 a.m., authorities received a distressing call reporting a gunshot victim at the same location. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service reached the scene promptly but sadly pronounced Turner dead at 2:03 a.m.
Friends and family of Turner arrived quickly, grappling with the sudden loss of a man they described as non-confrontational.
Sergeant LaQuitta Wade disclosed that initial investigations indicated Turner had been in the kitchen of his ground-floor apartment when gunfire erupted from outside, through the back door.
The victim’s roommate, who was in his own room at the time, heard the shots but did not witness the incident. Upon investigating the noise, he found Turner grievously wounded on the floor.
Authorities detained one individual for questioning, though Sergeant Wade clarified that this person was not the roommate.
The incident marks Birmingham’s 91st homicide this year, underscoring ongoing concerns about gun violence in the city.
