Dr. Jeanine Ronan, attending physician and Program Director of the Pediatrics Residency Program at CHOP, praised Friedes for her kindness, strength, and compassion towards everyone she encountered.
The tragedy unfolded around 7 p.m. near 18th and Spruce streets, where Friedes was cycling in a designated bike lane. Witnesses reported that the driver of a Volkswagen, aged 68, was speeding and veered into the bike lane, striking Friedes and causing her to be thrown a considerable distance before landing. Despite efforts by bystanders and emergency responders, Friedes succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.
