Barbara Friedes, a 30-year-old oncology resident at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia originally from Colorado, tragically lost her life on Wednesday night after being struck by a speeding driver in Center City.

Known for her dedication to treating pediatric cancer patients, Friedes’ untimely death has left a profound impact on her family, colleagues, and the medical community she served.

Described as a beacon of light by her brother, Friedes was deeply admired for her talents and achievements, having recently been appointed Chief Resident at CHOP. Dr. Jeanine Ronan, attending physician and Program Director of the Pediatrics Residency Program at CHOP, praised Friedes for her kindness, strength, and compassion towards everyone she encountered.

The tragedy unfolded around 7 p.m. near 18th and Spruce streets, where Friedes was cycling in a designated bike lane. Witnesses reported that the driver of a Volkswagen, aged 68, was speeding and veered into the bike lane, striking Friedes and causing her to be thrown a considerable distance before landing. Despite efforts by bystanders and emergency responders, Friedes succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.
