A man lost his life in a van-train collision near Kearney on Thursday.
The Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office reported that the incident occurred around 12:30 p.m.
Preliminary investigations revealed that a van was heading west on Highway 30, east of Cherry Avenue, just outside Kearney’s city limits. At the same time, a Union Pacific train was reversing on a track crossing the highway and struck the van.

Authorities confirmed that the male driver of the van, identified as 72-year-old Ronald Ayers of Kearney, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Buffalo County Attorney’s Office has ordered an autopsy. A female passenger in the van was not injured.
The section of Highway 30 remained closed for about four hours during the investigation.
Assisting the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office at the scene were the Kearney Police Department, the Kearney/Buffalo County Fatality Accident Investigation (FAIT) team, the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department, CHI GSH Paramedics, the Nebraska State Patrol, the Nebraska State Department of Roads, and the Buffalo County Attorney’s Office.
