The Bartholomew County Coroner’s Office has identified the man who perished in a Thursday accident on North U.S. 31 near County Road 800 North as Pawel Wierzbicki, 39, of Pennsylvania. His cause of death was recorded as severe trauma to the lower body.
Wierzbicki lost his life in a collision on southbound U.S. 31 near the Indiana Premium Outlets on Thursday, according to investigators.
The crash, which involved two dark-colored pickup trucks, occurred at 12:11 p.m. just south of County Road 800 North. Traffic on both the northbound and southbound lanes was diverted onto Executive Way and Presidential Lane to 800 North while emergency responders attended the scene. U.S. 31 was reopened to traffic shortly before 4 p.m. that day.
The Republic sought the identity of the driver of the pickup believed to have struck Wierzbicki, but authorities have not released that information. Additionally, the identity of the driver who was receiving assistance at the roadside has not been disclosed.
Bartholomew County Sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Dane Duke highlighted that the investigation is still underway.
“A subject was on the side of the road assisting a disabled vehicle, and unfortunately was struck by another vehicle, resulting in a fatality,” Duke stated.
A witness to the incident reported that it appeared the first pickup was towing a trailer carrying an engine that fell onto the highway. As Wierzbicki attempted to move the engine, he was hit by another southbound truck, the witness recounted.
In a press release issued Thursday night, Duke confirmed that preliminary investigations indicated Wierzbicki had stopped to help another motorist and was subsequently struck by another vehicle, leading to his death.
The Bartholomew County Accident Reconstruction Team is currently examining the details of the crash.
