Detectives in Portland are diligently working to uncover the details surrounding the recent shooting death of 20-year-old Asher Mendes, who had ties to Hawaii. His devastated family is urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
Asher Mendes, originally from Hawaii, had relocated to Portland with his family several years ago.
His parents, Louise and Jason Rodriguez, are seeking justice, stating, “We want answers and we want justice for Asher. That’s really all it boils down to.”
On July 12, at approximately 11:15 p.m., police responded to a report of a shooting at Sellwood Riverfront Park. Upon arrival, they discovered Mendes, who was already deceased.
The suspects had fled the scene before the authorities arrived. With the motive still unknown, both the police and Mendes’s loved ones are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
“He mattered. His life mattered,” his mother Louise, a native of Hawaii Island, tearfully remarked. “There’s nothing that justifies taking someone’s life like that. We want people to understand the pain we’re going through.”
The Mendes family remembered Asher as a friendly and sociable individual who enjoyed spending time with friends. Although he was a free spirit, he maintained close contact with his family and was passionate about music in addition to working with his father as a contractor.
The family’s grief is compounded by the recent birth of Mendes’s son, who arrived in February.
“We just want answers. We want people to come forward,” his parents implored.
Louise continued, “The loss is not just to us but to our large family back in Hawaii. It’s utterly devastating. I don’t think I can begin to heal until I know who did this and why.”
A week following his death, the family finally had the chance to view his body.
“I wish he didn’t have to go. We love him dearly and hope he can finally rest in peace. We won’t give up searching for those responsible,” they said.
Jason added, “We’ll handle it from here, my boy.”
The family is organizing a memorial service for next Saturday. Additionally, a GoFundMe campaign has been established by friends to assist with funeral and related expenses.
