On Saturday in Virginia Beach, police officers fatally shot a suspect who was armed with a crowbar and a metal rod while responding to a stabbing incident. The confrontation resulted in the death of one individual and left two others in critical condition.
The suspect has been identified as 22-year-old Marques Hasbrouck from Virginia Beach. The incident unfolded around 7 p.m. when officers arrived at a scene on White Beam Court.
They reported that Hasbrouck confronted them with a 20-inch crowbar and a 27-inch metal rod. Despite repeated orders to drop the weapons, Hasbrouck reportedly ignored the commands.
The officers deployed a taser, which was ineffective. Hasbrouck then advanced toward the officers, prompting them to use their firearms, leading to his death.
Multiple officers discharged their weapons, resulting in Hasbrouck being pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical services.
Inside the residence, officers discovered three victims, including a deceased woman later identified as 58-year-old Victoria Lane Hasbrouck of Virginia Beach. The other two individuals were transported to the hospital in critical condition.
Currently, police have no further suspects in this case.
VBPD Chief Paul Neudigate expressed condolences, stating, “Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragic event. Responding to domestic incidents is inherently risky, with each encounter carrying potential danger. These situations can be highly unstable and unpredictable, as was evident last night. We stand by our officers, the grieving family, and the community as we work through this challenging period.”
The VBPD Homicide Unit is leading a criminal investigation into the matter. Upon completion, the evidence will be reviewed by the Virginia Beach Office of the Commonwealth Attorney (OCA) to ensure adherence to legal standards.
The OCA will also conduct a separate, independent investigation. Following the criminal inquiries, the VBPD Internal Affairs Unit will perform an administrative review to assess compliance with departmental policies, procedures, and training.
