Fatal Niagara County plane crash claims life of Melanie Georger – Obituary
A tragic plane crash on Saturday morning in Niagara County resulted in the death of pilot Melanie Georger.
The incident occurred on the Niagara Scenic Parkway, just northeast of Fort Niagara State Park, according to a statement from the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office released Saturday afternoon.
Around 11:40 a.m., the sheriff’s office communications center started receiving 911 calls reporting the plane crash. Additional reports indicated a brush fire in the vicinity of the crash.
“The initial investigation indicated that an aircraft operated by Skydive the Falls had successfully released all its skydivers and was en route back to the landing site when it crashed. The pilot, who was the sole occupant, did not survive,” stated the sheriff’s office.
Both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) were promptly notified and are involved in the ongoing investigation, with the crash site remaining secured.
2 On Your Side independently verified with the family that the pilot was 26-year-old Melanie Georger from the Town of Tonawanda. Her family shared that she was passionate about aviation, having graduated from Kenmore East High School and the University at Buffalo, where she earned a degree in aerospace engineering.
Responders to the scene included New York State Police, Town of Lewiston Police, New York State Park Police, and the Youngstown Volunteer Fire Company, which managed to extinguish the fires.
