Authorities are looking into a deadly shooting that occurred near Independence Plaza in Kansas City over the weekend.

According to the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department, emergency responders were dispatched to the vicinity of 9th and Chestnut Avenue around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, following reports of a shooting incident.

Upon arrival, first responders discovered an adult male with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite immediate medical intervention and transport to the hospital, he was declared dead by the attending medical staff.

On Sunday, the victim was identified as 25-year-old Melquan T. West-Yancy.

The Kansas City Police Department has classified the case as a homicide. Officers have identified several witnesses, and detectives are in the process of interviewing them to uncover the circumstances leading to this tragic event.
