Fatal Fort Collins police shooting death of Clayton Pierce – Obituary

Clayton Pierce, a 42-year-old resident of Fort Collins, succumbed to his injuries following a confrontation with police near City Park on Sunday afternoon, according to a statement from the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident began around 12:40 p.m. when Fort Collins police were dispatched to a single-vehicle rollover accident at the intersection of Mountain and Bryan Avenues. Upon arrival, a police sergeant and an officer encountered Pierce outside the overturned vehicle, armed with a firearm.

A gunfire exchange ensued between Pierce and the officers, resulting in one officer being wounded. Pierce fled to the nearby Grandview Cemetery, where additional shots were fired. He was eventually subdued and received first aid from officers using the Special Weapons and Tactics Unit’s armored vehicle until paramedics arrived.

Pierce was transported to UCHealth Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland but later died from his injuries. The Larimer County Coroner’s Office has classified his death as a homicide due to gunshot wounds.

The sheriff’s office confirmed that Pierce was alone in the vehicle at the time of the accident. Witnesses reported that two dogs escaped from the vehicle; one has been found while the other, a pit bull terrier, is still missing.

The identity of the officer who was injured has not been disclosed, nor has the name of the officer involved in shooting Pierce been released.

No other individuals were harmed during the incident. During the investigation, which involved the 8th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT), additional law enforcement personnel established a perimeter around the area, and road closures lasted nearly 11 hours.

The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office continues to lead the investigation into the shooting. CIRT, a multi-agency unit under the 8th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, handles cases involving police-related shootings and incidents with serious injuries or fatalities.
