Nicholas J. Criscone, the 50-year-old principal of Glen-Worden Elementary School, has tragically passed away. State Police reported that Criscone died in a severe accident near Stage Road in Charlton on Saturday, with the investigation still ongoing.

According to police, the accident occurred around 5:30 a.m. Troopers arrived to find a vehicle fully engulfed in flames. Initial findings suggest that Criscone was traveling south on Stage Road when his car veered off the road, collided with a tree, and caught fire.

The school district expressed deep sorrow over his sudden death, noting how it has profoundly affected the school community. They described Criscone as a devoted educator, leader, and friend.

In response to this tragedy, District Superintendent Susan M. Swartz issued a letter on the Scotia-Glenville Central School District’s website. In her message, Swartz paid tribute to Criscone and provided information on grief support for both staff and students.

Swartz described Criscone’s passing as “tragic and untimely,” highlighting his central role at Glen-Worden Elementary School.

“Principal Criscone was not just a principal; he embodied the spirit of Glen-Worden Elementary School,” Swartz wrote.

Swartz also emphasized Criscone’s dedication and deep connection to the school community, urging everyone to remember his genuine care for others.

“Nick selflessly gave his time and talents to everyone around him,” Swartz noted, “Please honor his legacy by continuing to embrace the values of excellence, compassion, and unity that he instilled in our school.”

The district has arranged for grief counselors to be available at the Sacandaga Library Media Center. Parent-teacher associations have shared news of the tragedy on Facebook in remembrance of Criscone.

Debi Ryan, a long-time member of the Scotia-Glenville community, reflected on Criscone’s impact, noting that he had become an outstanding principal whose influence was felt throughout the district.

“I’ve always heard positive things about him,” Ryan said. “His name is the one that stands out to me when I think of Glen-Worden. I wouldn’t remember the other principals.”

Ryan, who noted Criscone’s previous work at Mayfield Elementary School, remarked that his death will affect the entire community, not just Glen-Worden Elementary but the broader Scotia-Glenville District as well.
