Fatal Salinas Highway 101 crash death of Virginio Cortez – Obituary
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office has identified the individual who lost his life in a tragic collision on Highway 101 in Salinas on Saturday.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the accident, which involved four vehicles, occurred on southbound Highway 101, just south of Laurel Drive. The incident was first reported around 1:07 p.m.
77-year-old Virginio Cortez, a resident of Salinas, was on the right shoulder changing a tire on his silver Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck. A maroon Nissan Altima was positioned on the right shoulder in front of the pickup truck, and a 38-year-old woman from Salinas was also nearby.
At that moment, a black 2005 Acura TL driven by 24-year-old Jose Ramiro Sanchez Jr. of Salinas was traveling in the number 2 lane. As Sanchez approached the pickup truck, he lost control and veered off the road, side-swiping the Salinas woman. The Acura then continued south, striking Cortez before colliding with the pickup truck.
The force of the impact pushed the pickup truck into the rear of the Nissan, causing the pickup to overturn onto its right side.
The Acura spun out of control and crashed into a white 2003 Honda Pilot driven by a 29-year-old man from Soledad. Although there were at least two children in the Honda, no injuries were reported, according to CHP.
