Fatal Pryor motel shooting death of Aaron Gonzales – Obituary
A man has been arrested following a tragic shooting outside a motel in Pryor. Authorities report that Aaron Gonzales, a worker from Mexico who was staying at the EconoLodge, was fatally shot in an incident that appears to be entirely random.
According to Pryor Police, the suspect, James Jackson, has been charged with first-degree murder. Jackson allegedly arrived at the motel searching for someone, but when Gonzales approached his car, Jackson opened fire.
Witnesses and 911 operators received calls from Jackson himself, stating that he had just shot someone and was en route to the Choteau Police Department to surrender. However, before he could reach his destination, Mayes County deputies apprehended him. During the arrest, multiple firearms, including three pistols, an AR-15, and a loaded shotgun, were discovered in Jackson’s vehicle.
Pryor Police Chief Jeremy Cantrell mentioned that Jackson did not know Gonzales and expressed concern that the situation could have escalated further, given the presence of other guests outside. Cantrell noted that Jackson exhibited signs of mental health issues and had a concerning social media history.
Jackson remains in the Mayes County jail facing charges of murder and unlawful possession of firearms as a convicted felon. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is now overseeing the case.
