A 28-year-old man named Omar Passmore was apprehended on Sunday in connection with the tragic death of 12-year-old Breaunna Cormley, who was discovered deceased on the ground floor of a rowhome in East Baltimore.
The incident took place on Friday night, and police swiftly identified Passmore as the primary suspect. According to charging documents, Passmore had a child with Cormley’s mother. Authorities suspect he was the sole individual present in the home with Cormley at the time of her death.
The documents provided do not specify a motive, only indicating that Passmore allegedly shot Cormley “for unknown reasons.”
Witnesses were interviewed and a timeline of the events was established by the police. They revealed that Cormley was alone in the house when Passmore arrived, and there were audible signs of a confrontation before he was seen sitting on the front steps and subsequently fleeing on foot.
Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott expressed his outrage during a news conference, stating, “This young lady had a whole life ahead of her, but a coward took her life. It’s a kid. That’s all that matters. You’re talking about a 12-year-old girl.”
Details surrounding the lead-up to the shooting remain sparse, but Police Commissioner Richard Worley confirmed that the incident was deliberate, emphasizing, “I can tell you it wasn’t accidental. It was not accidental. It was done on purpose.”
In a separate incident, just two days later, a 14-year-old boy named Jasper Davis was fatally shot in West Baltimore. Police have released photos of a suspect in that case.
Although gun violence in Baltimore has shown an overall decline since last year, with significant reductions in homicides and nonfatal shootings, there has been a recent increase in violence in recent weeks. The city recorded fewer than 300 homicides in 2023 for the first time in almost a decade, and this positive trend continued into early 2024.
