Authorities have confirmed the identities of the family members who perished in a fire at their Brampton home last week, which is now considered suspicious by officials.
Rajiv Warikoo, 51, Shilpa Kotha, 47, and their 16-year-old daughter Mahek Warikoo were residents of the house located near Big Sky Way and Van Kirk Drive, according to Peel Regional Police.
Toronto police have disclosed that Rajiv Warikoo was previously a volunteer with the Toronto police auxiliary program, a role he held until 2016.
The fire erupted shortly before 1:30 p.m. on March 7, and by the time emergency services arrived, the house was already engulfed in flames. Neighbors reported hearing a loud explosion just before the fire started.
Once the fire was under control, investigators found what appeared to be human remains among the debris. The extensive damage made it impossible to determine how many individuals were inside the home at the time.
Peel police’s homicide unit, along with the Ontario Fire Marshal and the Office of the Chief Coroner, is spearheading the investigation.
Const. Taryn Young, a spokesperson for Peel police, stated, “Our team is working tirelessly as the Ontario Fire Marshal has classified the incident as non-accidental.”
Many questions remain unanswered as authorities work to understand the fire’s origin and the causes of death for each family member, Young added.
