Authorities revealed on Monday that Jordan Leinen, 19, tragically lost her life in a drive-by shooting incident atop a Deerfoot Trail overpass over the weekend.
The Calgary Police indicated that she was fatally shot despite not being the intended victim, with investigators identifying a 17-year-old male, currently hospitalized in stable condition, as the likely target.
The incident unfolded on Saturday evening, prompting a response to Foothills Medical Centre after both victims arrived with gunshot wounds.
Sadly, Leinen succumbed to her injuries, marking the city’s tenth homicide of 2024 as declared by police following an autopsy.
According to officials, the shooting occurred around 5:20 p.m. as the victims traveled westbound on the 32nd Avenue N.E. overpass in a 2008 Acura MDX.
Law enforcement detailed that an unidentified vehicle approached and fired multiple shots at their vehicle, causing the fatal injuries.
During a subsequent press briefing, Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson emphasized that forensic evidence indicated the male as the primary target due to the location of the vehicle damage.
Gregson clarified that the male victim was driving, while providing limited details owing to his minor status.
“This act of violence will not go unanswered in our community, and we are committing substantial resources to uncovering the truth behind this tragedy,” Gregson affirmed in a statement, urging anyone with relevant information or footage to come forward.
Authorities are urging the public to contact them with any pertinent information or surveillance footage that could aid in their investigation.
