In February, a tragic car accident at St. David’s North Austin Medical Center resulted in the death of Nadia Bernard and left six others injured.
This incident has led the City of Austin to mandate the installation of safety barriers at all medical facilities in the city.
Nadia and Levi Bernard have since filed a lawsuit against St. David’s Healthcare, accusing the hospital of severe negligence for failing to install protective barriers at the pedestrian entrance, which could have prevented the accident.
Following the crash, the North entrance of the hospital was immediately closed and boarded up as efforts to repair and restore the waiting room began.
In response to the incident, the Austin City Council has approved a resolution requiring new medical facilities in the city to install crash-rated bollards at pedestrian entrances.
District 6 representative Mackenzie Kelly, who introduced the resolution on July 18, described the measure as “common sense” and emphasized its importance in preventing future tragedies.
Kelly stated, “If we can save even one life with this new policy, it will be worth the effort. We must do everything we can to prevent similar incidents.”
The resolution tasks City Manager T.C. Broadnax with evaluating the feasibility of the new requirements and exploring incentives for existing facilities to voluntarily comply.
Broadnax has until October 31 to present proposed changes to the council.
An investigation by KXAN, cited in the resolution, highlighted that over the past decade, more than 300 similar car crash incidents have occurred at medical facilities nationwide, with over 28,000 storefront-related crashes reported since 2014.
