Three young sisters and their mother from Menifee were killed in a devastating multi-vehicle accident while returning to Southern California from a Texas road trip, leaving their loved ones and community heartbroken.
The tragic collision, which also resulted in the deaths of their mother’s friend and her 13-year-old son, occurred on July 12 along Interstate 10 near Quartzsite, Arizona.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the accident happened as traffic was slowing due to a road repaving project. A utility truck loaded with asphalt collided with the back of the family’s vehicle, causing a five-car pileup that resulted in the deaths of all six occupants in the family’s car.
Kasandra Tunchez, the aunt of the Perez sisters, reflected on the joy the sisters brought to the family, especially to their father, Vincente Perez.
“My brother is coping as best as he can,” Tunchez shared with KTLA’s Shelby Nelson. “Our family has come together to support him through this difficult time.”
Tunchez described Olivia, 12, Emalynn, 11, and Giana, 8, as exceptionally bright and respectful.
The Perez sisters, along with their mother Karly, and their friends Heather Ventura and her son Lucas Tejada, are remembered in photos that capture their joy and connection.
Tunchez recalled Olivia as being lively and a bit of a diva as she neared her teenage years, Emalynn as passionate about learning, and Giana as a spirited and straightforward young girl.
The sisters shared a deep love for softball, with the older girls excelling as pitchers and the youngest preparing to follow in their footsteps.
Softball remains a cherished memory for those who knew the girls, including their uncle Chad, who reflects on their impact fondly.
