Rodney Terry, a 58-year-old resident of Town Creek, lost his life in a workplace incident at GE Appliances in Decatur early Wednesday morning, according to Morgan County’s coroner.
At approximately 9:22 a.m., Decatur Fire & Rescue EMS were dispatched to the refrigeration facility located at 2328 Point Mallard Drive Southeast following a report of an “entrapment with a piece of machinery,” as noted by Deputy Fire Chief Nathan Springer.
Julie Wood, a spokesperson for GE Appliances, expressed deep sorrow over the incident. “The loss of one of our team members at the Decatur refrigeration plant has profoundly affected us. We are collaborating with local authorities to determine the cause of this unfortunate accident and are reaching out to the employee’s family to provide support.”
In response to the tragedy, the plant’s first shift was dismissed, and second shift operations have been canceled “out of respect” for the affected Decatur team, Wood added.
“Additional support through our employee assistance program is being made available to our Decatur staff,” Wood confirmed.
Coroner Jeff Chunn indicated that Terry’s death will be classified as an “industrial accident.”
