Fatal East Flatbush shooting death of Christian Emile – Obituary

In the wake of unsettling body camera footage being made public, the family of Christian Emile, who was fatally shot by police in Brooklyn, is now pressing for the indictment of the NYPD officers involved in the incident.

Released on Thursday by the Office of the New York State Attorney General, the footage depicts the deadly encounter on May 12 at the intersection of E. 52nd St. and Church Ave. in East Flatbush.

The video, captured by Officer Alexander Campos’s body-worn camera, shows Campos arriving at the scene and stepping out of a marked patrol car.

The footage then reveals Campos and his colleagues—Sgt. Kyle Sforza and Officer Brian Mejia-Morel—engaging with Emile before pursuing him.

The video further documents Campos deploying his Taser, which briefly stuns Emile but fails to incapacitate him. Campos is then seen moving behind a vehicle and onto the sidewalk, where officers discharge their weapons multiple times, hitting Emile at least once.

The footage ends with Emile lying motionless on the sidewalk, the officers suggesting CPR and calling for a superior officer, with a gun visible near Emile.

At a press briefing following the shooting, NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey stated that Emile was allegedly pointing a gun at a rival prior to the police arrival.

Additionally, surveillance footage from a nearby convenience store, also released on Thursday, captures Emile seemingly arguing with several individuals before the police intervention. The video, recorded from a distance and behind Emile, does not clearly show whether he was holding a gun when the officers arrived.

The redacted body camera footage does not include the entire sequence of events post-shooting, but Maddrey noted that officers performed “lifesaving measures” on Emile before he was transported to Kings County Hospital, where he later died.

Emile’s family, who have reviewed the unredacted footage, argue that the video shows Emile being shot after allegedly pointing a gun at the officers, a detail they believe was omitted from Maddrey’s initial briefing. They claim that the NYPD’s portrayal of the incident is misleading and further undermines the Department’s account of the events.

Attorney MK Kaishian, representing Emile’s family, contends that Emile was “running in fear for his own life” from the officers.

“He should be alive today,” Kaishian asserted. “Instead, NYPD officers shot him as he fled, continuing to fire recklessly into the community they are supposed to protect.”

The family is now calling on City Hall to take action against what they label as “killer cops” and urging the attorney general to pursue an indictment.
