Kamarian Burgess dies in fatal Fort Pierce shooting
Fatal Fort Pierce shooting death of Kamarian Burgess – Obituary
Fort Pierce police have confirmed that the victim of the shooting on Tuesday night was 17-year-old Kamarian Burgess.
On Wednesday, our team reported on the visible damage from bullet holes now marking nearby homes.
Maj. Mike Santiago informed WPTV’s Kate Hussey that the incident began around 7 p.m. when a group was gathered near the 1600 block of Avenue K. They were ambushed by two or three individuals who opened fire from behind.
Santiago mentioned that a Fort Pierce police tactical officer, who was in the vicinity, heard the gunshots and arrived on the scene within approximately 30 seconds.
By that time, the group had dispersed, leaving Burgess lying on the ground and unresponsive.
Burgess was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
This shooting is the 16th covered by WPTV since May and the fourth within the past week, with three of these being classified as homicides. The fourth incident did not result in injuries.
In response to a question in June about how they are addressing the violence, WPTV’s Ethan Stein was told by Santiago that the police have implemented new strategies that are proving effective.
“Since our last meeting, we have introduced tactical units specifically aimed at tackling violent crime,” said Santiago. “Thanks to the prompt response and tactics employed by our officer, we gathered significant leads, enabling us to actively pursue this case and seize four firearms from the scene.”
Since the initiation of the department’s new tactical units in June, Santiago reported 26 arrests related to violent crime and the confiscation of 42 firearms.
“Our strategies are showing positive results,” Santiago stated. “We have executed search warrants at multiple locations and have developed further leads on this case. However, we need more community support. Many people witnessed the events that night.”
Santiago emphasized that while the shooting appears to be an isolated incident, the investigation is hindered by a lack of cooperation from the community. He urged anyone with information to contact the police or Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers, with an option to remain anonymous.
