A tragic quadruple shooting early Friday morning in Vaughan, Ontario, resulted in the deaths of a two-year-old boy and a 40-year-old individual. Police have made an arrest in what they are calling a “targeted” attack.
Emergency services arrived at the residence on Casa Nova Drive, near Major MacKenzie Drive and Weston Road in the Woodbridge area, shortly before 9 a.m. on Friday. Upon arrival, officers discovered four people inside the home with gunshot injuries.
One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while the remaining three were rushed to the hospital, with one suffering from life-threatening wounds.
By Saturday, police identified the deceased victims as Marcus Vu, aged two, and 40-year-old Thi Trang Do. The exact details of who succumbed to their injuries at the scene versus in the hospital have not been confirmed, although it appeared that an adult’s body was removed from the home on Friday.
The other two victims are reported to be in stable condition.
Van Viet Duong, a 41-year-old from Toronto, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder related to the incident. Authorities believe Duong was acquainted with the victims, though the nature of their relationship remains undisclosed. The shooting is considered targeted by the police.
York Regional Police are seeking any witnesses who have yet to come forward and are asking for dashcam or CCTV footage from the area around Casa Nova Drive at the time of the incident.
An eyewitness reported hearing a series of gunshots and observed the suspected shooter leaving the scene and fleeing in a vehicle.
The investigation is ongoing, with reports indicating that vehicles in the driveway of the home were previously set on fire on Christmas Day. While police have not confirmed if this is connected, they noted that any related incidents would be examined as part of the current investigation.
Vaughan Mayor Steven Del Duca expressed his frustration with the violence in a statement, calling for stricter laws and longer sentences for dangerous offenders. He noted the recent shooting in the Vaughan Mills parking lot, which also resulted in a fatality, underscoring the difficult week for the community.
