Tempe authorities have identified Teresa Marie Alva, 37, as the victim who perished in a house fire resulting from a standoff involving the U.S. Marshal’s Service and a fugitive.
The tragic event unfolded on July 18, when Alva was inside a Tempe residence that caught fire after 35-year-old Matt Walsh, a fugitive, fled the scene following an exchange of gunfire with Valley SWAT team members.
Police had initially surrounded the house after discovering Walsh had barricaded himself inside with at least five other people. Four of these individuals cooperated with law enforcement and were detained before being released. However, Walsh and an unidentified woman remained inside as SWAT team members tried to negotiate a peaceful surrender.
Shortly thereafter, Walsh opened fire on the officers from within the home, prompting a return of gunfire from the police. Walsh, armed with a handgun, managed to escape by jumping a fence into a neighboring yard. He was subsequently struck by police gunfire and succumbed to his injuries.
Following this, officials observed smoke emanating from the residence Walsh had abandoned. Multiple fire departments responded and extinguished the blaze, which had completely engulfed the house.
After a four-day investigation, authorities discovered Alva’s body within the charred remains of the home. The exact cause of the fire remains undetermined. No injuries to law enforcement officers were reported during the incident.
