Authorities are probing the death of 44-year-old Cassis Griffin from Austin, who was discovered unresponsive in his cell at the Williamson County Jail.
Griffin, who was taken into custody on April 23, 2024, for a felony DWI case and awaiting transfer to a state facility, was found by Williamson County Corrections Officers on July 25, 2024.
Despite immediate life-saving efforts and the arrival of Georgetown Fire and EMS, Griffin was transported to a local hospital where he was declared dead shortly after, as reported by the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office.
The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office is coordinating with the District Attorney’s Office on the investigation.
Since Griffin was in custody at the time of his death, local detectives are treating it as an in-custody incident and have requested an external law enforcement agency to conduct an independent investigation.
“Currently, it seems Mr. Griffin’s death may have been due to a natural medical condition, but we are waiting for additional information and toxicology results from the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office,” stated Commander John Foster from the Williamson County Criminal Investigations Division.
The investigation will proceed as authorities await toxicology results and an official determination from the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office. Further details will be provided as the inquiry continues.
