Fatal Innisfil shooting death of Chris Doncaster – Obituary
Chris Doncaster has been identified as the suspect in a tragic shooting incident in Innisfil, Ontario, which resulted in the deaths of two police officers.
Neighbors have described Doncaster as a troubled individual but declined to provide further details about his personal life. The emotional impact on his family, especially his grandparents, is deeply concerning to those who knew them.
South Simcoe Police Service Chief John Van Dyke confirmed the identities of the deceased officers: Constable Devon Northrup, 33, and Constable Morgan Russell, 54, during a press briefing. Both officers’ images have been shared publicly.
Constable Northrup had served with the South Simcoe Police for six years, focusing on community engagement and mental health crisis support. Constable Russell was a seasoned 33-year veteran, known for his work in uniform patrol and crisis negotiation.
“This is an incredibly difficult time for our police force, the affected families, and our communities. Our primary concern now is to support our members and their families during this mourning period,” Van Dyke stated.
Northrup is survived by his partner, parents, and close friends, while Russell leaves behind his wife and two teenage children. Van Dyke noted a personal connection, revealing that he and Russell attended police college together 33 years ago.
The York Regional Police have been asked to investigate the incident, with the Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) also involved. Due to the ongoing investigation, detailed information remains limited. The SIU has not yet received consent from Doncaster’s family to release his name, and the man’s autopsy is scheduled for Friday.
The shooting occurred after officers responded to a disturbance call at a residence on 25th Sideroad and 9th Line. Upon arrival, gunfire was exchanged between Doncaster, a 23-year-old resident, and the officers. Doncaster was pronounced dead at the scene. Both injured officers were transported to local hospitals; Constable Northrup died from his injuries, and Constable Russell succumbed to his injuries early Wednesday morning.
A vigil was held at Innisfil Community Church to honor the fallen officers, and a police procession took place to the coroner’s office in Toronto. Premier Doug Ford expressed his sorrow and extended condolences to the officers’ families and the police community. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also offered his condolences via social media.
