Fatal Long Beach hotel shooting death of Jaiquan Granberry – Obituary

Authorities announced on Friday, July 26, that a 19-year-old man already in custody for a recent garage homicide has been identified as the suspect in another murder that took place at a Long Beach hotel a week prior.

Mathew De Diego, also 19 and from Long Beach, was named on Friday as the suspect in the July 18th shooting death of Jaiquan Granberry, his friend, at a hotel in the 4100 block of Willow Street. Police revealed the identity of Granberry, also from Long Beach, on the same day.

Five days after Granberry’s murder, De Diego allegedly shot and killed 41-year-old Jeffrey Poorman in his garage located in the 5900 block of Lime Avenue. Authorities stated that De Diego and Poorman had some prior acquaintance, though the exact nature of their relationship remains under investigation.

De Diego was apprehended approximately seven hours following the second shooting in the 5000 block of Gardenia Avenue and is currently held on $3 million bail, according to police and jail records.

A firearm, believed to have been used in Granberry’s shooting, was discovered among other pieces of evidence, which are currently being processed by the police.

The motives behind both shootings are still being investigated. De Diego has been charged with murder in Poorman’s death as of Thursday, according to court records. Detectives plan to submit their case regarding Granberry’s killing on Friday.
