The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office has revealed the identity of the woman who tragically lost her life in a severe vehicle collision on Interstate 270 in southwestern Franklin County on Thursday afternoon.
Karen Ann Gearhart, 79, from Lancaster in Fairfield County, was confirmed dead at the scene at 3:36 p.m. by medics from Jackson Township, as reported by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The accident took place at 3:26 p.m. on the westbound lanes of I-270, between Routes 23 and 104, according to the sheriff’s office.
The crash happened when a 2022 Freightliner truck, which had slowed due to traffic, was struck from behind by a 2000 GMC van carrying Gearhart, another adult, and a child.
Following the impact, the van burst into flames, prompting several nearby drivers to rescue the adult and child from the burning vehicle.
The adult rescued from the van was taken to OhioHealth Grant Hospital in stable condition, while the child was transported to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, also in stable condition.
The driver of the Freightliner truck was unharmed in the incident.
