The Louisiana State Police are actively investigating a tragic incident in Jeanerette, Louisiana, which resulted in the injury of three officers and the death of Lafayette Police Officer Senior Corporal Segus Jolivette. The event unfolded on July 25, 2024, in Iberia Parish, located south of Lafayette and New Iberia along Hwy. 90.

The Lafayette Police Department has confirmed that the deceased officer is Senior Corporal Segus Jolivette, 35, a dedicated member of the force for 11 years. Jolivette leaves behind a wife and five children.

Described as a distinguished member of the SWAT negotiator team, Jolivette excelled as a patrol officer and previously served as a school resource officer. His career also included time as a juvenile detective and as a respected member of the honor guard. His efforts extended beyond his official duties, actively supporting the explorer program to educate Lafayette’s youth about law enforcement and community engagement, according to a Lafayette Police news release.

Jolivette began his law enforcement career with the Opelousas Police Department. The OPD noted in a Facebook tribute that Jolivette started with the Junior Police Academy, did ride-alongs with officers while he was a student, and then served four years as a patrolman before joining the Lafayette Police Department.

“Officer Jolivette served our community with unwavering dedication and professionalism,” the post stated. “His dedication and desire to make a positive impact led him to Lafayette Police Department, where he continued to serve with distinction. Officer Segus Jolivette will be remembered for his bravery, kindness, and commitment to a safer community. We honor his memory and are deeply grateful for his service. Rest in peace, Officer Jolivette. Your sacrifice will not be forgotten.”

The incident began when state troopers, along with multiple local agencies, responded to a situation on Hubertville Road near Martin Luther King Drive in Jeanerette to assist the local Marshal’s Office with a barricaded suspect. What started as an attempt to address the situation evolved into a protracted standoff, during which four Lafayette Police officers were shot.

The suspect, identified as Nyjal Hurst, 31, had several outstanding warrants and allegedly barricaded himself while holding hostages. Shots were fired as officers tried to rescue the hostages. Two of the injured officers were transported to Iberia Medical Center, another to Ochsner in Lafayette, while the fourth officer did not survive. The suspect has been apprehended and sustained a leg injury. Two of the injured officers have been discharged from the hospital, while the third officer is recovering from a serious leg wound.

The Louisiana State Police are now leading the investigation into the shooting involving Lafayette PD officers.
