The tragic crash that occurred in San Francisco’s West Portal neighborhood has claimed the lives of Diego Cardoso de Oliveira, 40, Matilde Ramos Pinto, 38, and their 1-year-old son, Joaquin Ramos Pinto de Oliveira.
The Medical Examiner’s office confirmed their identities on Tuesday.
The devastating accident took place on Saturday when an SUV driven by a 78-year-old woman collided with a bus shelter on Ulloa Street.
The driver has been arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and reckless driving, though formal charges have not yet been filed. She was one of the five individuals injured in the crash.
Currently, an infant involved in the incident remains in critical condition at the hospital.
On Monday evening, a vigil was held in San Francisco to honor the deceased family members, attended by hundreds, including the city’s mayor and police chief. Tributes to the family, including photographs, were displayed by friends at the crash site.
A witness described the scene as “the most graphic, vivid, and gruesome thing I’ve ever seen.” Some local residents have expressed concerns about the confusing layout of the area where the accident occurred, suggesting that changes might be necessary to improve safety.
