A 65-year-old man from Carthage, identified as Gary R. Johnson, tragically lost his life in a helicopter crash in Jefferson County on Saturday.
Gary R. Johnson, the sole occupant and pilot of the helicopter, was confirmed deceased, according to a state police news release on Sunday.
The incident occurred on Saturday when state police were alerted to a helicopter crash near 64 Liberty St. in the village of West Carthage. Upon arrival, troopers discovered Johnson with severe injuries. He was promptly transported to Carthage Area Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The helicopter involved, a Schweizer 269C-1, crashed under unexplained circumstances. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) spokesperson, Keith Holloway, stated that the investigation into the crash is ongoing. The Schweizer 269C-1 is a light utility helicopter commonly used for training and agricultural purposes.
Holloway urged anyone with information, including witnesses and those with surveillance footage, to contact the NTSB at [email protected] to aid in the investigation.
