Fatal Sauget train collision death of unidentified driver – Obituary
Early Saturday morning, July 27, 2024, a tragic accident occurred in Sauget when a pickup truck crashed into a moving train, resulting in the death of the truck’s driver. Authorities have yet to confirm his identity.
At around 2 a.m., Sauget Police Chief James Jones reported that the collision took place on the 3000 block of Mississippi Avenue (Illinois Route 3). The pickup truck, a blue Ford F-150, was heading south when it crossed the railroad tracks and collided with the train. At the time of the crash, the crossing gates were down and the warning lights were active.
The Union Pacific train involved had two engines and four cars. When emergency responders arrived, they found both the truck and one of the train engines on fire. The driver of the truck was pronounced dead at the scene by St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. at 4:30 a.m. The cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma.
Efforts are underway to identify the victim, as the truck was severely damaged and its license plates were unreadable. The truck, an older model F-150, was completely burned. There were no other injuries reported, and no additional occupants were found in the truck. Sauget Fire Department personnel were involved in extricating the driver from the wreckage.
