Fatal Fort Wayne shooting death of Gawon Kaerey Benson – Obituary
Gawon Kaerey Benson, a 31-year-old resident of Fort Wayne, was shot and killed by a Fort Wayne Police Department officer on Tuesday. The incident occurred on West Campus Drive at the Purdue University Fort Wayne campus.
Benson was previously sought by authorities after failing to return to DeKalb County Community Corrections. He was supposed to report to the DeKalb County Jail on July 25 to begin serving an 80-day sentence for a misdemeanor charge related to operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
The cause of Benson’s death was multiple gunshot wounds, and the manner of death has been classified as a police action homicide. He becomes the 22nd homicide victim in Allen County for the year.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, involving the Fort Wayne Police Department, Indiana State Police, Purdue Fort Wayne Police Department, Allen County Prosecutor’s Office, and Allen County Coroner’s Office.
