J. Michael Cline, the renowned founder of Fandango, tragically passed away after a fall from the 20th floor of the Kimberly Hotel in New York City on Tuesday, July 16. He was 64 years old.
Cline, a prominent finance executive celebrated for launching the popular movie ticketing and streaming platform Fandango, was discovered unconscious and unresponsive in a third-floor courtyard of the Kimberly Hotel, located at 145 East 50th Street.
According to a statement from the New York Police Department, officers arrived to find a male who appeared to have fallen from a significant height. The investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
A Cornell University graduate with a degree in hotel administration, Cline earned his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1985. He founded Fandango in 1999, describing it as a service designed to enhance the movie-going experience. He highlighted its distinctiveness and the ease it brought to consumers.
Cline sold a majority stake of Fandango to NBCUniversal in 2007, while Warner Bros Discovery holds a minority share. Besides Fandango, he also established several other companies, including R1 RCM, Accolade, Insureon, Everspring, and Accumen.
At the time of his passing, Cline was serving as the executive chairman at Juxtapose, a venture capital fund he joined in 2018. He was also the founder of Stealth Mode Startup Company, a founding and managing partner at Accretive, and served on the board of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.
A former colleague praised Cline’s creativity and his commitment to supporting exhibitors. Cline was also recognized for his philanthropy, particularly his significant donations to environmental causes such as the World Wildlife Fund.
