Fatal Wythe County drowning death of Lawrence Antonio Parsons – Obituary

The Wythe County Sheriff’s Office has reported that the body of 31-year-old Lawrence Antonio Parsons was retrieved from the New River on Wednesday, July 31.

Sheriff Charles Foster revealed that on Monday, July 29, around 8:00 p.m., authorities were alerted to a drowning incident at the Jackson Ferry Bridge, located near the intersection of Fort Chriswell Road and Pauley Flatwoods Road.

According to the sheriff, Parsons, a resident of Galax, had intended to swim across the river when he went underwater and failed to resurface.

Search and rescue operations commenced immediately and continued until approximately 11 p.m. that evening. The search resumed on Tuesday, July 30, utilizing watercraft, a helicopter, and drones throughout the day.

The body of Parsons was eventually located by search and rescue personnel near a bridge in the New River at around 1:10 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31.

The sheriff noted that the body has been sent to the hospital for further examination by the medical examiner, with no current evidence suggesting the involvement of alcohol or drugs. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
