Matthew A. Poole dies in fatal Kea’au shooting

Fatal Kea’au shooting death of Matthew A. Poole – Obituary

Authorities have revealed that Matthew A. Poole, who reported his girlfriend Ashley M. Kuregian missing, took his own life in Kea’au, Hawaii.

On May 23, police investigating Kuregian’s disappearance executed a search warrant at a residence in Kea’au. According to a press release from the Hawaii Police Department, as officers announced their presence, they heard what they described as a “loud pop” that resembled a gunshot.

Inside the home, they discovered Poole, Kuregian’s boyfriend, deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A firearm was also found at the scene. An autopsy confirmed that Poole had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Two days prior, on May 21, Poole had reported Kuregian missing after she had not been seen for approximately a week. During a search of Poole’s residence on the evening of May 23, authorities uncovered information that led them to search the Orchidland Estates Subdivision for Kuregian. By 7 p.m., they discovered a body in advanced stages of decomposition on a vacant lot in Kea’au. The remains were later identified as Kuregian.

The medical examiner determined that Kuregian had died from a single gunshot wound to the head, ruling her death a homicide. Police are now treating the case as a murder-suicide.
