A 43-year-old man, Raheem Jefferson, was tragically killed in a shooting outside a mosque in Philadelphia, an incident that has drawn strong condemnation from Pennsylvania’s governor.
Philadelphia Police found Jefferson on the ground, unresponsive, with multiple gunshot wounds, including at least one to the head and several to the torso, on Tuesday afternoon. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital shortly after.
According to police Chief Inspector Scott Small, the assailant fired at least 17 rounds from a large-caliber semi-automatic weapon. Surveillance footage reviewed by authorities shows Jefferson and another individual walking towards the Al-Aqsa Islamic Society for a prayer service when the suspect approached from behind and began shooting, Small revealed at a press conference.
“The entire incident was captured on camera,” Small told reporters. “The shooter stands over the victim just a few feet away, continuing to fire at the 43-year-old while he is on the ground in the parking lot. This clearly indicates an execution-style killing.”
