Robert Collins, aged 68 from Fort Wayne, tragically lost his life early Wednesday morning in a pedestrian accident on I-69 South at the 310 mile marker. The incident occurred just after midnight, between the Lima Road and Goshen Road exits.
According to the Fort Wayne Police Department, officers were dispatched following reports that a semi-truck had struck Collins. The victim, who was found deceased at the scene, was crossing the southbound lanes of I-69 when the collision occurred.
The dark clothing he was wearing may have played a role in the accident. Preliminary investigations suggest that neither the semi-truck driver’s speed nor alcohol were contributing factors.
The Allen County Coroner confirmed that Collins’s death was due to multiple blunt force injuries and was ruled an accident.
This incident marks the second time in under a week that a pedestrian has been fatally struck by a semi on I-69 in Allen County. The first occurred last Thursday as a hit and run, and authorities have since identified the semi involved.
During the investigation, southbound traffic on I-69 was diverted at Lima Road, and entrance ramps to I-69 South at Lima were closed. The area was reopened to traffic just before 4 a.m.
