Fatal Des Moines shooting death of Weston Dean Derby of Bellevue – Obituary
Authorities have identified Weston Dean Derby of Bellevue as the man who was killed by Des Moines police officers after a no-contact order violation report escalated into a chase and a shooting.
Sgt. Paul Parizek, spokesperson for the Des Moines police, informed KCCI that officers responded around 3:30 a.m. to a residence to investigate a violation of a protective order.
Officers located the suspect, 45-year-old Weston Dean Derby, driving nearby and attempted to pull him over.
According to the police, Derby fled when officers tried to stop his vehicle, initiating a pursuit.
The chase ended approximately one mile away when Derby’s vehicle veered off the road and became entangled in vegetation.
Body camera footage revealed that Derby attempted to escape on foot and brandished a handgun before being shot by the officers.
