Brett Hawke Raises Concerns Over Pan Zhanle’s Record-Breaking Swim

Fatal remarks from Brett Hawke cast doubt on Pan Zhanle’s 100m freestyle world record achievement

Australian swimming coach Brett Hawke has expressed skepticism over Pan Zhanle’s remarkable performance, calling the Chinese swimmer’s world record-breaking 100m freestyle swim “not humanly possible.”

Pan Zhanle, only 19 years old, captured international attention after securing gold with a time of 46.40 seconds, finishing over a second ahead of his closest competitor, Kyle Chalmers.

Pan’s dominance in the race, where he shaved nearly half a second off his own world record, marks the largest margin of victory in the men’s 100m freestyle since Johnny Weissmuller’s win in 1928. However, his feat has been clouded by persistent suspicions surrounding the Chinese swimming team.

Despite the controversies, Pan stated that he is unconcerned by the ongoing doping scandal involving China’s swimmers at the Paris Games. The controversy, highlighted by an investigation from The New York Times and German broadcaster ARD, revealed that 23 athletes from the Tokyo 2020 Olympics failed drug tests for a prohibited heart medication. Among those implicated, 11 are participating in the current Olympics, and two more were cleared after testing positive for an anabolic steroid in 2022, which was attributed to contaminated meat.
