A tragic event in Dededo has led to the arrest of John Paul Sayama Charfauros, 27, and Jonarie Marie Reyes Cruz, 30, following the death of their 3-year-old stepson. Charfauros faces charges including aggravated murder, murder, use of a deadly weapon in a felony, and aggravated child abuse. Cruz has been charged with child abuse, family violence, child neglect, conspiracy, and complicity.
The Guam Police Department was alerted on July 7 by an out-of-state relative who reported the child’s apparent drowning. However, inconsistencies in the story raised suspicions, prompting a thorough investigation.
Police Chief Stephen Ignacio revealed disturbing details during a press conference, emphasizing the gruesome nature of the case. Surveillance footage from the Villa Rosario Condos pool area in Dededo showed Charfauros allegedly submerging the child’s head underwater and repeatedly striking him. The boy, who was crying and screaming, was then lifted from the water but fell, hitting his head on the concrete pool deck.
According to Ignacio, Charfauros attempted to revive the child but soon forced him back into the water, using his feet to keep the child submerged. Other family members were seen leaving the scene during this time.
Further investigation revealed that Charfauros dragged the unconscious child toward a pavilion and dropped him on the concrete. Despite efforts to resuscitate him, the child remained in critical condition at Guam Regional Medical City before being transferred to Guam Memorial Hospital, where he was declared brain dead the following day. He was taken off life support and passed away.
Child Protective Services and the Guam Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division were called in when discrepancies in Charfauros and Cruz’s statements came to light. Court documents indicate Cruz admitted to lying about the incident and deleting texts from Charfauros. Both suspects were arrested on July 31 and are currently held at the Department of Corrections.
