Jyoti Sonar dies in tragic Mumbai accident

Fatal Mumbai accident claims Jyoti Sonar’s life – Obituary

In Mumbai, a 32-year-old woman named Jyoti Sonar was swept away by a large wave while taking photos with her family on June 9.

Sonar was at the Bandra Bandstand by the Arabian Sea with her husband, Mukesh Sonar, and their three children when the tragic incident occurred during high tide. She was sitting on a rock with her husband while their children observed from a distance.

A chilling video that has since circulated widely on social media shows large waves crashing against the rock where the couple was seated. A particularly massive wave eventually engulfed them, dragging Sonar into the sea.

The children were heard desperately calling out for their “mummy” as she was swept away. Mukesh Sonar reportedly tried to hold onto his wife’s saree to save her, but he was unsuccessful. Nearby onlookers managed to pull him back to safety, according to a report from Mid-Day.

“I lost my balance and we both slipped. A man held me while I grabbed my wife, but she could not be saved,” Mukesh Sonar told local police, who were informed of the incident by bystanders.

After a 20-hour search operation, the Mumbai Coast Guard found Jyoti Sonar’s body on June 10.

Mukesh Sonar recounted that the family went on picnics every fortnight. They had initially planned to visit a different area that week, but access to Juhu beach was restricted due to high tide, so they decided to visit Bandra instead.

“Jyoti followed me into the sea, and we began enjoying the feel of the water splashing on our clothes. The kids were also trying to move towards us, but we restricted them since the sea was rough,” Mukesh Sonar shared with the Indian daily.
