Fatal Misawa car crash death of Tyler Jacobs – Obituary

Airman 1st Class Tyler Jacobs, 19, has been identified as the airman who lost his life on July 14 when a vehicle collided with a roadside garage near Misawa Air Base in Japan.

The tragic accident occurred near Misawa Station, resulting in the deaths of Jacobs and another passenger, while a third individual sustained injuries. The crash also ignited a fire in the garage, as confirmed by Japanese police and an Air Force news release on Wednesday.

Although the Air Force did not disclose Jacobs’ hometown, his Facebook profile suggests he was from Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Jacobs and 26-year-old Mikio Imanami from Rokkasho village are believed to have perished in the fiery crash, which occurred around 4 a.m., according to a Misawa Police spokesperson.

Due to the severity of the burns, immediate identification of the victims was not possible, as noted by the Misawa Police on July 16. A day earlier, a spokesperson for the 35th Fighter Wing mentioned that the airman had been identified, but his name was withheld until his family could be notified.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation by Misawa police. However, they have determined that Jacobs, who was driving the vehicle, had a blood-alcohol level above Japan’s legal limit at the time of the crash. The legal limit for driving under the influence in Japan is 0.03%, significantly lower than the U.S. limit of 0.08%.

The surviving passenger, 20-year-old Yuta Onoue, was treated at a local hospital for a broken leg and burns on his back.

Senior Airman Brieanna Bolfing, a spokeswoman for the base, redirected inquiries regarding Jacobs’ duty assignment to Misawa city police, who declined to provide further details on Wednesday.
