Verlin Hunt, a 69-year-old resident of Battlefield, Missouri, tragically lost his life in a truck accident near Grand Island, Nebraska.
The incident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. on Wednesday when Hunt’s semi-truck veered off the interstate and plunged into the far west lake at the Mormon Island recreation area.
Hunt was the sole occupant of the vehicle at the time of the crash. Upon receiving the emergency call, deputies from the Hall County Sheriff’s Department arrived at the scene to find the semi-truck and its trailer partially submerged along the lake’s southern shore. Firefighters, equipped with water rescue gear, quickly approached the cab of the truck in an attempt to save Hunt.
Despite life-saving efforts, Hunt was pronounced dead at the scene. A preliminary investigation suggests that the 2020 Freightliner was traveling eastbound on Interstate 80 when it crossed the median, went through the westbound lanes, descended a steep embankment, and ultimately ended up in the lake.
Authorities do not suspect alcohol as a factor in the crash, and Hunt was reportedly wearing his seat belt at the time. An accident reconstruction specialist has been assigned to further investigate the cause of the accident.
The crash also resulted in a diesel fuel spill in the lake, prompting an environmental cleanup response to address the potential ecological impact. Lt. Mike Korte of the Nebraska State Patrol confirmed that the cause of the truck’s sudden departure from the road is still under investigation.
