Early Friday morning, a tragic accident in Downtown Memphis claimed the lives of an officer and a civilian, with another officer sustaining serious injuries, according to police.
Interim Memphis Police Chief C.J. Davis described the incident as “catastrophic.”
Police reported that at approximately 3 a.m., they responded to a collision at the intersection of Danny Thomas and Mississippi boulevards involving an MPD squad car and a gray Nissan. Upon arrival, officers found the wrecked vehicles.
The crash resulted in injuries to three individuals: two MPD officers and the male driver of the Nissan. All three were transported to Regional One Health, where one officer and the Nissan driver were pronounced dead. The surviving officer is in critical condition.
Investigations revealed that the Nissan driver had been shot. Authorities reported that the shooting occurred following a “disagreement” between two men about two miles away from the crash site, with one of the men injured in the incident.
A relative confirmed to FOX13 that the deceased officer was 34-year-old Demetrice Johnson.
Police have yet to file charges, as their investigation remains ongoing.
The Memphis Police Department identified the fallen officer as Demetrice Johnson, who joined the force in May 2023 and graduated from the academy 13 months later. He was assigned to the North Main Station.
“Officer Johnson exemplified the highest standards of courage and dedication,” the MPD stated. “He leaves behind a loving family who will miss him dearly and an MPD family committed to honoring his memory through service.”
The Tennessee Highway Patrol has been called to investigate the crash, while MPD’s Homicide Bureau is examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
